LeTourneau Tops Leaderboard After Opening Round of SCAC Women’s Golf Championship

Tomorrow’s second round at the par-72, 5,820-yard layout will begin at 8:30 a.m.

On a sunny day without a cloud in the sky, LeTourneau finished +23 and 14 shot clear of St. Thomas which is currently second after firing a first-round score of 325 (+37). The YellowJackets cumulative team score of 311 in the lowest opening round score in SCAC history, eclipsing the previous record of 314, set by former members Rhodes College in 2001 and Trinity University in 2023. LeTourneau led the field in both birdies (10) and pars (48).

Three YellowJackets sit in the top six after the opening round, led by Elena Jurado and Kinley Pessel who both fired opening rounds of 77 to sit tied for second on the individual leaderboard. Jurado and Pessel both finished tied for fourth in the field in the opening round with two birdies each. Emerson Swanner posted an opening round of 78 (+6) courtesy of 11 pars and one birdie to finish tied for sixth.

St. Thomas’ Leah Torres sits atop the individual leaderboard after tying for the seventh-lowest opening round at the SCAC Championships with a 75 (+3).  Torres led the field with 13 pars on the day and finished tied for fourth with two birdies. Her teammate Cameron Frazier fired an opening 18-hole score of 78 (+6) to sit tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.

 

Schreiner University opened with a first-round score of 330 (+42) to round out the top three squads following day one. The Mountaineers were led by Abby Yanta who sits tied for second after an opening round 77 (+5).

Behind an opening round 77 (+5) from Katelyn Henslee (T2nd Ind.), McMurry University is fourth in the team standings after an opening round team score of 335 (+47). Rounding out the top five in the team standings after the opening round is Centenary College with team score of 341 (+53). The Ladies were paced on the course by Haylee Crowder who posted a first-round score of 78 (+6) to sit tied for sixth individually in the 43-player field.

In the remainder of the women’s first-round standings, Concordia University (Texas) sits in sixth place (346, +58), followed by Hendrix College in seventh (358, +70) and the University of Dallas in eighth (360, +72). Texas Lutheran University, which does not have enough players to post a team score, was led by Belle Asbury’s opening-round 78, placing her in a tie for sixth individually.
