KAYLA MACKEL OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior guard from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Basketball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 26 through Sunday, February 1. SCAC Women's Basketball Release (Week 12)
Mackel dominated while leading the Tigers to a 2-0 weekend against Concordia (TX) and Texas Lutheran. She finished the weekend with 59 points, 14 rebounds and six three pointers. On Friday in Austin, Mackel collected her second 30-point game (career-high) and shot 52.6 percent from the floor while also grabbing eight boards. The following day in Seguin, Mackel scored 29 points, shot 58.8 percent from the floor, 62.5 percent (5-8) from three-point range and grabbed six rebounds. She also had four steals and three blocks over the two games.
Junior guard Lexi Martin of Austin College led the ‘Roos in scoring, going 2-0, extending their win streak to six games, with road victories at Centenary and LeTourneau. Martin averaged 14.5 points per game, shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from three, knocking down 8-of-13 attempts from long distance. She also added 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 rebounds per game. Senior guard Amiyah Barrow of Centenary averaged 10.5 points per game in a pair of home games against Austin College and Dallas. She grabbed nine rebounds, tallied six assists, and had three steals and a blocked shot while averaging 35.5 minutes/game. Her 12 points against the 'Roos on Friday marked her ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season. First-year guard Gabriella Barrera of Dallas had a pair of strong performances last week in leading the Crusaders, averaging 17 points, highlighted by a 20-point performance against LeTourneau on the road last Friday. Additionally, she averaged six rebounds and five assists per game. Junior forward Riley Brady of Hendrix averaged 27.0 points and 16.5 rebounds in the Warriors’ weekend split versus McMurry and Schreiner. She posted a 28-20 double-double against the War Hawks on Friday night, going 14-of-15 from the line and shooting 53.8 percent from the field. She followed that up with 26 points and 13 rebounds versus Schreiner on Sunday afternoon, going 7-of-15 from the field and knocking down 12 of 13 free throws in the win. Junior guard Mariana Espinosa of LeTourneau averaged 12.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the YellowJackets. In a 78-69 win over Dallas, Espinosa notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding five assists and three steals. Senior guard Helana Chadwick of McMurry led the War Hawks to a pair of SCAC win last week, knocking off Hendrix and Ozarks. Chadwick averaged 28.5 points per game on an impressive 50 percent shooting and dished out 7.0 assists per game, including 10 in the win over the Eagles. She also averaged 2.5 steals and 1.5 rebounds in lifting McMurry to a pair of key wins. Junior guard Abby Beene of Ozarks averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting over 40 percent from the three-point line in two games. Beene posted a double-double in a win against Schreiner with 20 points and ten rebounds. Junior guard Kenna Gibson of St. Thomas averaged 15 points of 50 percent shooting in leading the Celts to a 1-1 record on the road last week, highlighted by a win at Concordia. Gibson also averaged 5.5 rebounds and one steal, assist and block per game on the week. Senior guard Lauren Sansano of Texas Lutheran poured in a career-high 33 points on 10-of-18 shooting to lead the Bulldogs in their nine-point win over St. Thomas. She reached 1,000 career points in the win, where she also recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-high 14 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block. Sansano is the 14th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone; with the last coming last season with former teammate, Kailee Mulkey. Sansano is the first player in program history with 1,000-plus points and 250-plus assists in their career .
