Two Programs Repeat as SCAC Winter Team Sportsmanship Award Winners

SUWANEE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced its 2024-25 Winter Sportsmanship Team awards on Thursday, highlighted by two programs repeating as honorees in their respective sports.

The Austin College women's swimming program, along with Colorado College women's basketball squad repeated as winners from a year ago. The Southwestern University men’s swimming team and Colorado College men’s basketball team rounded out the 2024-25 honorees.   

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year in an effort to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The winter awards are presented in men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving.

In swimming and diving, the Austin College women’s program secured its third consecutive honor, marking the first time in conference history one institution has been honored three straight years in women’s swimming. The ‘Roos join Southwestern University (2016-17, 2018-19 & 2019-20) as the only other women’s program to win the award three times. Austin College was followed in the voting by Southwestern in second and University of the Ozarks in third.   

For the men, Southwestern earned top honors, followed by Austin College and Ozarks. The Pirates’ honor marks the fourth in program history and the first since 2019-20. Southwestern, which is the only program in SCAC men’s swimming history to secure four SCAC SAAC All-Sportsmanship Team awards, also took home top honors in 2016-17 and 2018-19.

On the hardwood, Colorado College swept the team sportsmanship honors for the fourth time in the last six years. The Tiger men took top honors in men’s basketball for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. CC had won an SCAC-best five consecutive honors from 2018-19 through 2022-23. The Tigers were followed in the balloting by Schreiner University and the University of Dallas.

For the women, Colorado College secured the award for the fourth-straight year and seventh time in program history. This current run of four-straight honors is the first of its kind in SCAC women’s basketball. CC also won the honor in back-to-back years in 2016-17 and 2017-18 and was additionally recognized in 2019-20 to go along with its current run of four-straight. Southwestern finished second, while Austin College rounded out the top three in balloting by their peers.

The awards were voted on by each member institution's SAAC, with each individual group ranking the top three teams in each sport. The first place selections were awarded five points, second place earned three points and third place earned one point. Points were then totaled to select the conference's overall winner.
