TREY CATES OF LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY, a junior from Portland, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men’s Golfer-of-the-Week for competition played from Monday, March 23 through Tuesday, March 24. SCAC Golf Release (Spring - Week 5)
Cates delivered a record-breaking performance and the LeTourneau men's golf team captured the Linda Lowery Invitational title at the par-72 Teravista Golf Club on Tuesday. Cates set a program record for a 36-hole tournament by finishing 7-under with his 137 (68-69) and captured his first collegiate medalist honor. The junior opened with a round of 4-under, 68 on Monday before finishing with a 3-under, 69 on Tuesday. Cates was nearly flawless on Monday with six birdies and only one bogey, while he carded five birdies on Tuesday.
LeTourneau finished with a 1-under, 575 (286-289) in the 36-hole tournament to place 18 shots ahead of second-place St. Thomas. The YellowJackets topped the field of 11 teams, mostly comprised of SCAC members.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore Cooper Hollomon of Texas Lutheran earned his fifth top ten finish of the season on Tuesday, finishing in second place, at the Linda Lowery Invitational. Hollomon led the Bulldogs with a score of 140 (-4), including his three-under final round to climb four spots on the leaderboard and finish three shots back of the tournament's winner, Clayton Cates from LeTourneau. Senior Oliver Naumann of Hendrix finished tied for fourth, shooting even par for the tournament, at the Linda Lowery Invitational. Naumann, who shot rounds of 71 and 73 for a 144, recorded six birdies for the tournament. Sophomore Jesus Del Aguila of St. Thomas led the way for the Celts, finishing sixth overall with a two-round score of +1, at the Linda Lowery Invitational. He carded an even-par 72 in the opening round and followed with a 73 (+1) to pace UST. Senior Parker Smith of Concordia (Texas) posted a top 10 finish, carding a two-day total of 147 to finish at +3 and tied for eighth at the Linda Lowery Invitational. His opening round 70 was tied for the second lowest round of the day. Sophomore Tripten Roberts of McMurry finished tied for 12th at the Linda Lowery Invitational, firing rounds of 75 and 74 to finish at 149 (+5). His final round 74 catapulted him seven spots up the individual leaderboard.
