JONAS MARTINEZ OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from Edinburg, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for meets conducted Friday, September 12. SCAC Cross Country Release (Week 3)
Martinez had a fantastic performance at the UIW Invitational last Friday, leading the Bulldogs for the first time in his career. Averaging an impressive 5:10.8 seconds/mile pace, Jonas completed the 4-mile race in a time of 20:42.9 finishing in 28th place out of 150 runners. He crossed the finish line within one second of the other top two Division III runners in the field. Jonas continues to improve off his rookie campaign, running 25 seconds per mile faster at this race than he did in any of his races last cross-country season.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year Zack Wroten of Centenary had the Gents' top finish on Friday evening in the ULM Cross Country Invitational in Sterlington, La. against a competitive field held at the Sterlington Sports Complex. The rookie ran a time of 33:03.31 to finish 24th overall in the 8K race. First-year Isaias Mendoza of Concordia (Tex.) paced the Tornados at the Rice Invitational last Friday finishing 55th overall with a 5.2K time of 18:38.0. His performance helped Concordia secure a seventh-place overall team finish. Junior Grayson Gaddis of LeTourneau helped the YellowJackets earn fifth-place last Friday at the Rice Invitational after securing 26th-place individually, crossing the line of the 5.2K course in 17:00.8. Sophomore Isaac Gonzales of McMurry was outstanding for the War Hawks last Friday at the UIW Invitational, turning in the third fastest four-mile time in program history, crossing the line in 20:55.8 to finish 36th. His time was the fastest four-mile effort in over a decade for the program. First-year Elijah Emerson of University of St. Thomas (Tex.) delivered another strong performance in just his second meet of the season, placing third overall at the Rice Invitational with a time of 16:09.6. He was the top Division III finisher in the field, crossing the line of the 5.2K course just behind Division I competition.
