LEONEL CUELLAR OF CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (TX), a junior goalkeeper from Midlithian, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played from Monday, October 27th through Sunday, November 2nd. SCAC Men's Soccer Release (Week 10)
Cuellar closed out the regular season in style, posting his sixth clean sheet of the season, helping the Tornados secure a result and a top three finish in the SCAC standings with a 0-0 draw against TLU. He recorded four saves in the win and now leads the conference with 68 saves on the season. He also improved his goals-against average on the season, dropping it to 0.92, third in the SCAC this year.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior goalkeeper Alex Wolter of Colorado College made one save and allowed just one goal in the Tigers win over Dallas on the road Saturday to clinch the program’s third consecutive regular season title. The win also secured the No. 1 seed for CC going into this week’s conference tournament. It was the 15th game this year that Wolter has held opponents to only one goal or less. Junior goalkeeper Edson Camara Martinez of LeTourneau notched two saves in a key, 2-1, win at Austin College. The win would secure the YellowJackets spot as the six seed in the upcoming SCAC Tournament. Sophomore goalkeeper Joaquin Sanchez of McMurry posted his first clean sheet of the season to help the War Hawks secure a 1-0 win at Schreiner to close out the regular season. Sanchez made one save in the win. First-year goalkeeper Ernesto Avila of Texas Lutheran made three saves and posted his fourth clean sheet in the last five matches to close out the regular season in scoreless draw against Concordia. Avila now has eight shutouts on the year, is third in the league with 56 saves and second with a 0.73 GAA.
