JOEY RAMIREZ OF CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (TEX.), a senior guard from Weimar, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week for games played from Sunday, December 28 through Sunday, January 4. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 8)
Ramirez helped lead the Tornados to a 2-0 week with averages of 22.0 ppg, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 steals. In a 98-92 conference opening win over TLU, Ramirez tallied a game-highs of 26 points and three steals as he added a team-best seven boards. In the final non-conference game of the regular season where the Tornados outlasted UMHB in a 92-91 thriller, Ramirez stuffed the stat sheet as he collected an 18-point, 10 rebound double-double and added five assists and four steals. This marks his third offensive player of the week honor this season.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year Tasshir Pina-Warren of Austin College averaged 18.5 points on nearly 70% shooting from the field across two games, adding 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.5 steals-per-game. Pina-Warren had a career-high 23 points on New Year's Eve against Belhaven, making 11-of-13 shot attempts. Junior Kyle Roach of Hendrix averaged 17.0 points per game over the Warriors' past three contests. He put up a career-high 25 points in Hendrix's conference-opening win over Ozarks and followed that up with 15 against the Eagles in the return conference fixture. First-year Max Frels of LeTourneau scored a career-high 18 points with eight rebounds, three assists, and one steal in an 80-75 win at Centenary, the YellowJackets' only game of the week. Frels hit a career-high six 3-pointers and had zero turnovers to his three assists. First-year Eyal Shamri of Ozarks (Ark.) exploded offensively for the Eagles over the last four games averaging 25.5 points behind a 47 percent shooting clip from the three-point line. Shamri hit 11-of-23 from the three-point line and 53 percent overall from the field during the Eagles' four-game stretch. Against Millsaps on the road, Shamri poured in 33 points and then followed with 28 and 23 point games. Shamri also averaged 6.0 rebounds and dished out 2.8 assists per game in the last four games. Sophomore Dylan Snow of Schreiner averaged 20 points per game over a pair of contests including scoring 27 in a 120-108 win over Howard Payne. Snow was a perfect 14-of-14 from the free thow line over the week adding six assists and eight rebounds as well. Senior Angel Johnson of St. Thomas (Tex.) controlled the game on the offensive end with his playmaking and decision-making, dishing out 10 assists without a turnover in a 78-62 conference win over Colorado College. Johnson also contributed across the stat sheet with six rebounds and three steals. Senior Semaj Edwards of Texas Lutheran averaged 19.5 points across two games for the Bulldogs including 21 in a conference loss to Concordia (Tex.). Edwards shot 77.8 percent against the Tornados and was perfect from the free throw line. He added six rebounds and three steals over the week.
