WHITNEY, Texas -- No. 12 Trinity University continued to put the hammer down on Monday, firing a second-round 313 (+25) to open a 40-shot lead heading into tomorrow's final day of the 2025 SCAC Women’s Golf Championship which is being contested on The New Course at White Bluff Golf Resort. Tomorrow’s third and final round at the par-72, 5,718-yard layout will begin at 8:25 a.m., with the leaders scheduled to take the tee around 9:45 a.m. The women will start from the No. 10 tee.
The four-time defending champions of the event, Trinity extended its eight shot first round lead to a commanding 40-shot margin on Monday, finishing with a second-round total of 313 (+25) and a two-day total of 639 (+63). Southwestern University, who finished Monday's round with a team score of 345 (+57), remains in second but now finds itself closer to fifth place than the top of the leaderboard and the surging Tigers. Trinity's two-day margin is the second-largest at a 54-hole women's event, trailing only the 42-shot lead the Southwestern women had over DePauw following Day Two of the 2009 championship.
The Pirates' two-day total of 679 (+103) puts them 23 shots clear of University of Dallas, who sits in third place after rounds of 365 and 337 and a two-day score of 702 (+126). Schreiner University is fourth (363-342--702) and University of St. Thomas is fifth (357-349--706).
Scoring was down almost across the board on Monday as teams averaged an improvement of 12.4 shots from Monday to Sunday as the opening round was contested in much windier conditions. Individually, 24 of the 38 competitors shot a better round on Tuesday than the previous day.
Not surprisingly, Trinity leads the field in both pars (86) and birdies (16) and has controlled damage across the board by posting a field-low 24 double bogeys or worse.
Individually, Trinity players sit 1-2-3 on the leaderboard and a fourth is in the top seven with sophomore Lauren Huddleston (pictured) leading the way after firing a tournament low score of even par 72 and leads teammates senior Alejandra Sanchez De le Fuente Molino and junior Jessica Mason by six and seven shots, respectively. Huddleston's 72 is the lowest second round score in tournament history (54-hole event) and places her at +9 for the tournament (153). It was also her all-time career low round. She birdied two of her first three holes on Monday and made the turn at -2 before settling for an even par round.
Molino, the 2022 medalist of the event, is in second after rounds of 82 and 77 (159) and Mason is in third, one shot back of Molino, following rounds of 76 and 84 (160). Senior Carmen Kennett is tied at seventh with a 167 (87-80).
Southwestern was led by a pair of juniors as Sloane Panter (83-78) and first-round leader Rachel Harris (75-89) sit in fourth and fifth with two-day totals of 161 and 164, respectively.
Rounding out the women's second-round team standings, Texas Lutheran University is sixth with 738 (363-375), Centenary College is seventh after posting a two-day total of 763 (404-359), and McMurry University is eighth with a 779 (393-386).
On the individual leaderboard, other golfers in the top 10 are the Dallas duo of seniors Kimberly Burch and Madison Meduna who are sixth and ninth, respectively. Burch fired a second-round 79 to sit at 165 and Meduna finished her round with an 82 to stand at 171. Schreiner sophomores Abby Yanta and Micah Rabey are tied for seventh and tied for 10th, respectively. Yanta shot an 81 to finish at 167 and Rabey finished with a second-round 82 to sit at 172. St. Thomas sophomore Emma Cook backed up her first round 84 with an 88 on Tuesday to sit tied for 10th at 172.
