JOSEPH GUIDRY OF UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS, a junior on the men's tennis team from Lafayette, Louisiana, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning April 14.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Joseph enjoys bringing a sense of community and belonging to campus, and the junior has achieved that with a simple act. He organizes a Friday afternoon of playing UNO at the campus Starbucks. What started as a class project has turned into a way to build camaraderie on campus. The now popular activity has students playing for hours.

“It’s been so fun,” said Guidry. “I think community service is important in different kinds of ways, whether it is volunteering or making an impact on campus and putting smiles of other’s faces.”

Joseph has enjoyed his experience as an NCAA Division III student-athlete. He cites many benefits of competing at a Division III institution.

“I love being an NCAA Division III athlete,” he said. “I think it’s great at a small school. It’s very rewarding. I think being able to know other athletes contributes to the overall environment of the school. I can treasure my experience at Ozarks forever.”

Like all student-athletes, Josseph has to balance his studies as well as the athletic aspect.

“It comes down to prioritizing,” he said. “For me, my studies come first, and then my extra time goes to tennis and that has translated well for me this season.”

Guidry understands his experience as a student-athlete will help him in the real world.

“Playing collegiate sports will help me stay focused and on task,” he said. “I think it will help me earn my wins in the career path I am choosing.”

Guidry has excelled in the classroom as a finance major. He was named to the Academic All-Conference Team last season and will be a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Honor Roll this season. He has been on the President’s List (4.0) or Dean’s List every semester at Ozarks. Off the court, he is a Resident Assistant. Earlier this season, he was named SCAC Doubles Team of the Week.

Last season, he made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. He has also been on the ITA Scholar Athlete Team.

He is again among the team leaders in wins this season with six singles wins and five doubles wins.
