LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Three SCAC women's swimming and diving teams were in the pool last weekend, highlighted by an intra-conference dual between Austin College and Southwestern.
Southwestern opened its season with a resounding 188-89 victory over Austin College on Saturday. The Pirates nearly swept all the top finishes, placing first in every event except the 50 Yard Freestyle, missing the mark by fractions of a second and taking three of the top four spots in the event.
Freshman Jesse Stovall helped pace the Pirates, winning both of her individual events and serving as the anchor leg in the women's winning 200 Yard Medley Relay team, which finished with a time of 1:54.51; and was the first swimmer in the first-place 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team, which finished with a 1:46.37 time.
Stovall finished the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:00.53, which was roughly seven seconds faster than Austin College's Chloe Hunt, who finished second; and had a 54.56 final time in the 100 Yard Freestyle to play a hand in 40 of the Pirates' points.
For the Austin College women, Brooke Le delivered a first place finish in the 50 freestyle, coming in with a time of 26.15.
Trinity competed against University of Incarnate Word as the swimming events were held at UIW's Ann Barshop Natatorium, while Trinity hosted diving in Hixon Natatorium.
Tiger sophomore Mabel Fowler won the women's 200-yard backstroke in a school-record time of 2:03.21, breaking the mark set by Ashley Ward in 2016. Fowler's performance is the fastest current time in the NCAA Division III. She also earned NCAA "B" Cut distinction.
Fowler was the runner-up to the UIW swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle by just over a second. Her time of 1:54.27 is currently third in Division III.
The 2018 swimming and diving schedule continues next week with Austin College, Centenary, McMurry and the University of the Ozarks all set to compete at the Hendrix College Relays and Classic.
