LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's golf spring season is officially underway as Centenary, Johnson & Wales, Schreiner and Southwestern all hit the links over the last three weeks.
The Schreiner men were the first to play this spring, teeing it up at the Texas A&M International Invitational the first week of February. The Mountaineers, who were the only Division III team in the compettion, placed sixth overall, after being in seventh place after the first day. Senior Jake Brown fired rounds of 74-74-74 to post a final score 222 (+6) and tie for 12th in the 46 man field.
The following week, the Mountaineers posted third-place finishes at the Bowie Intercollegiate, both during the stroke and match play sessions of the tournament. Sophomore Wyatt Koricanek tied for medalist honors during the stroke play portion of the event, posting rounds of 71 and 70 for a two-round total of 141.
Centenary College also competed at the Bowie Intercollegiate, which was contested at the Brownwood Country Club. The Gents finished eighth during the stroke play portion of the event and defeated Howard Payne in the consolation match to finish in seventh during match play. 25. Junior Reed Balcerowicz paced the Gents during the stroke play portion with a two day total of 154 (76-78) to finish in a tie for 25th individually.
Yesterday, the Southwestern's men's golf fell short 10 strokes to beat out UT-Tyler and finished second in the Linda Lowery Invitational with a team total of 903. Johnson & Wales placed eighth with a score of 1125.
Junior Cade Osgood led the Pirates by placing second in the individuals with 78-69-74-221 (+8) while also picking up 11 birdies, and he had a total of 28 pars. Matthew Christl also did well for the Pirates and tied for third with a final score of 75-74-73-222 (+9) and ended with the second-highest pars, totaling 33 and sinking in seven birdies.
Junior Alexander Fernandez finished in a tie for 25th with a three-round total of 252 (+39) to pace Johnson & Wales. The St. Johns, Florida native finished the tournament on fire, making birdies on three of his final four holes (12, 13 and 15) after starting the day on the 16th.
