LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Four of the league's seven men's teams were in action this week, including the University of Dallas and Trinity University who participated at the West Cup which was contested at the Sierra La Verne Country Club in La Verne, Calif.
Emilio Montalvo led Dallas to an eighth place finish in the 16 team field, as the sophomore moved up seven spots on the final day, carding a 75 on the round for a total score of 228 (76, 77, 75) to finish tied for 22nd. His 35 pars were tied for second-best in the field. Junior Jacob Wade, who had a final round 79 and tied for 22nd place with Montalvo, led the Crusaders with eight birdies. As a team, Dallas fired rounds of 311, 308 and 305 for a three-day score of 924 (+72).
Trinity shot a third-round 308 for a total score of 936 at the par-71 Sierra La Verne Country Country Club to finish in a tie for 12th place. The Tigers improved their second-round score by 13 strokes and rose from 13th place. Sophomore Dawson Dally shot a 4-over-par 76 in Tuesday's round for a three-day total of 232 and a tie for 36th place. Dally rose four positions from Monday's opening two rounds. He also tied for fourth in the tournament with nine birdies on his card.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College won the tournament with a cumulative team score of 874. The University of Redlands came in second with an 883, while the University of La Verne finished in third (889).
Texas Lutheran competed at the Texas Cup, hosted by the University of Texas at Dallas, and finished in second place after inclement weather on Sunday forced the event to be called after one round. The Bulldogs posted a team score of 296 on Saturday and lost the team title by three shots to McMurry. TLU freshman Chase Maus tied for the individual lead after a round-one 71, but lost the individual title on a tie-breaker. He was named to the Texas Cup All-Tournament Team.
Junior Alex Fernandez shot a second-round 76 on Sunday to finish tied for 28th to lead the Johnson & Wales men's team at the Bob Writz Invitational. Fernandez finished +12 for the two-round tournament at Bear Creek Golf Club after opening with an 80 on Saturday. He now has at least one round in the 70s in six of seven events this year. JWU placed 10th as a team with a two-day total of 677.
