LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball wrapped up league play last week and although the four teams who had qualified for the conference tournament were already known, seeding was far from settled until the final games were in the books.
Texas Lutheran (14-4 SCAC; 29-10 overall) clinched the top seed at next weekend's tournament by taking two of three games from Schreiner. Although it was Sunday's 11-3 victory that clinched a share of the regular season conference title and the tournament top seed, it was Saturday's 21-inning affair that had social media jumping. The Mountaineers pulled out a 7-6 victory in a game that tied the conference record for the longest in league history.
As the top seed, TLU will take on the four-seed, Southwestern (10-8 SCAC; 23-17 overall), in Friday's 1 p.m. CT tourney opener. Texas Lutheran took two of three from the Pirates in their three-game regular season series played the first weekend in April.
Second-seeded Trinity (14-4 SCAC; 30-9 overall) will take on third-seeded Centenary (10-8 SCAC; 18-21-1) in Friday's second game. Trinity won the series by taking two of three from the Gents when they met the last weekend in March in San Antonio during the regular season.
Centenary and Southwestern tied for the third seed but the Gents earned the higher line by virtue of taking 2 of 3 games from the Pirates in their three-game regular season finale which took place in Georgetown this past weekend.
The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday with the winners of game one and two squaring off at Noon CT for a slot in the championship round. Friday's two first-round losers will fight for the right to get back into the championship round with an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. CT.
In the modern SCAC era (1992 to present), Trinity has claimed 11 tournament titles (1995, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010-11, 2013-16) - the most of any program current or past - while Southwestern has won five titles (1996-1998, 2000 and 2002). Centenary (2017) and Texas Lutheran (2018) have won the last two SCAC baseball tournament championships.
The 2019 SCAC Baseball Tournament is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 3-5, and will be played at the Depot at Cleburne Station in Cleburne, Texas, for the second straight year.
