GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Southwestern University Pirates third baseman Daniel Montgomery Jr. was named to the D3Baseball.com All-America Second Team, continuing a run of postseason accolades that include All-SCAC First Team and D3Baseball.com All-Region honors. Complete Team
Montgomery had 60 hits this season on a .364 batting average, scoring 48 runs and driving in 45 RBI. He led the SCAC in home runs with nine and produced 15 doubles, four triples, and 10 stolen bases, finishing with 110 total bases.
"We asked Dan to move from shortstop to third base this year and, while a shortstop never wants to move, he did it and didn't complain," Head Coach J.C. Bunch said. "He could have pouted but instead he led our team on and off the field.
"We challenged him to be the best third baseman in the conference and he responded, putting up huge offensive numbers and playing great defense. He wasn't just the best third baseman in the conference, he was the best in the region and second best in the country."
Montgomery is the first Southwestern University baseball player to make an All-American team since Matt Odom in 2004. Will Cates received D3Baseball.com honorable mention in 2015. He was the only SCAC player to earn the honor this season.
Montgomery's selection marks the fifth consecutive year the SCAC has had at least one First or Second Team D3baseball.com All-America selection and the 29th overall D3baseball.com All-America honor (First, Second, Third, Fourth or HM) for the conference.
The D3Baseball.com All-America team is one of two recognized All-America teams, along with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) teams. The ABCA All-America and All-Region teams have yet to be announced.
Toby Welk of the Penn State Berks was named the D3Baseball.com Player of the Year. John Howard of Washington (Mo.) was named the Pitcher of the Year and Hendrix pitcher Jack Hodgins was named Rookie of the Year.
