SOPHIA SMITH OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year from Plano, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for performances during the meets conducted Friday, January 9 through Sunday, January 11. SCAC Swimming & Diving Release (Week 10)
Smith had an outstanding meet this past weekend where she posted three individual event wins, as well as contributed to a relay win. In one of her individual races, the 200 fly (2:17.39), she was able to post the second-fastest time in the conference this season, as well as break the school record in the event. Smith also had a great performance in the 200 IM (2:19.30), where she posted a season best time, and also a top three time in the conference this season. She also was just one second off her best time in the 200 backstroke (2:17.04).
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Junior Reece Esser of Centenary picked up wins in the 50 free (26.55) and 100 fly (1:03.57) at the Austin College Invitational and earned a runner-up finish in the 100 back (1:05.34). Esser helped the Ladies earn a second-place finish with 286 points against the host 'Roos and McMurry University and the junior now has 13 wins this season. Senior Sarah Buchman of Colorado College helped the Tigers to a pair of team wins over the weekend. On Friday against Chapman University, Buchman was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (splitting 26.02 fly), finished third in the 50 free with a 25.33, first in the 100 fly (1:00.90) and had the fastest split on the 200 free relay (24.23) that took second place. The senior led the way with four wins on Sunday. She was a member of the women's 200 butterfly (splitting 26.3) and 500 freestyle relay (54.6) as the 100 free leg of the relay, as well as the 200 mixed freestyle (24.29) and 400 mixed medley relay as the fly leg. First-year Brooklynn Lizcano of McMurry won the 100 breaststroke at the Austin College Invitational with a 1:17.66.
