LAYNIE KOVACS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior libero from McKinney, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for matches played from Tuesday, October 21st through Sunday, October 26th. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 9)
Kovacs totaled 68 digs across a 3-0 weekend in conference play for the 'Roos with 19 or more digs in each contest. Her weekend-high came in a five-set win over Schreiner as she posted 28 digs while averaging 5.67 digs per set. The junior also added 22 assists this weekend. The honor marks the second weekly award of the season for Kovacs.
Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Junior libero Meghan Gannon of Colorado College led the Tigers with 33 digs over a 3-0 weekend, averaging 3.67 digs per set. The Tigers did not drop a set over the weekend as Gannon added eight assists as well. Sophomore defensive specialist Faith Jones of Hendrix totaled 73 digs over the Warriors' three matches, including an impressive 37 digs in Hendrix's 3-1 win over Texas Lutheran. Jones averaged 6.08 digs per set and added nine assists. Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Jalie Miller of McMurry totaled 50 digs across three matches including 28 against Ozarks (Ark.). The War Hawks were 3-0 in league play as Miller averaged 4.17 digs per set and added 12 assists. First-year defensive specialist Lauralai Bradley of Ozarks (Ark.) posted 30 digs across the Eagles' three matches including 16 against McMurry. Bradley also added 12 assists and a service ace. Senior defensive specialist Jenna Palomarez of Schreiner totaled 81 digs over four matches with 66 coming in league play. Palomarez posted 34 digs in a five-set loss to Austin College as she averaged 5.08 digs per set. Junior libero Carly Lange of St. Thomas (Tex.) collected 53 digs over four matches including 44 in SCAC action as the Celts swept league opponents this weekend. Lange averaged 4.89 digs per set in conference play and 13 assists and four service aces. Senior libero/defensive specialist Richelle Guerra of Texas Lutheran posted 54 digs across three matches with 26 against Hendrix and 25 against Austin College. Guerra averaged 5.40 digs per set with 15 assists.
