LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's swimming & diving teams returned to competition in 2018 at the Austin College Invitational over the weekend.
Austin College, along with McMurry University and Centenary College competed at the AC Invite this weekend. The Warhawks took top honors among SCAC programs, finishing in fourth place with 277 points. The 'Roos took fifth, coming in at 242 total points, while Centenary rounded out the competing teams in sixth place with 186 points.
Robyn Remschel paced the McMurry squad, earning a pair of victories in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. Remschel swam a 1:00.89 time in the 100 backstroke and 2:13.40 minutes in the 200 backstroke. She was also second in the 50-yard freestyle relay (26.34). Remschel also handled the lead leg of McM's 400-yard freestyle relay team. The unit – also comprised of Jessica Gryder, Mariah Rhoades and Zandria Rodriguez – placed third overall in a time of 4:00.22 minutes.
Rhoades picked up a fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.21) and a seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:10.21). Rodriguez was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:09.66). Katie Gorka earned third in the grueling 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 12:35.43 minutes, as well as finishing 10th in the 100 freestyle (1:05.15) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (6:20.34). Monica Flores was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:58.12).
Austin College's Sophie Garriga had a strong showing in the 200 yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:25.95 to take fourth place, and added a fifth place finish in the 200 yard back with a time of 2:25.54. Katie Voelkel added a fifth place finish of her own in the 200 yard breaststroke, touching with a time of 2:59.14, while Sarah Edzards was fifth in the 500 free with a time of 6:08.23 and fifth in the 1000 yard free with a time of 12:37.80.
For the Centenary Ladies, sophomore Jessica Jordan and junior Elena Ring finished second and third in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:13.93 and 1:16.33. The 400 medley relay team of senior Caitlyn Faulhaber, sophomore Ellen Atkinson, Ring, and Jordan touched the wall in third with a mark of 4:34.27.
