MARIO JOHNSON OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior guard/forward from Houston, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for games played from Monday, January 5 through Sunday, January 11. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 9)
Johnson helped the Mountaineers to a 2-0 week holding opponents to 42 percent and 36 percent from the floor. Johnson averaged nine rebounds per game with 11 defensive boards across a pair of league wins over LeTourneau and Centenary while adding four steals and two blocks.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year Ryan Dupre of Austin College stuffed the stat sheet in three games last week, averaging 10.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks while shooting 57.9 percent from the field and making 7-of-13 three pointers. Dupre scored a career-high 23 points and knocked down a last second free throw to lead the 'Roos to a 78-77 win over Howard Payne. Sophomore Nicholas Addison of Centenary had an impressive weekend for the Gents on the defensive side of the ball as he totaled 18 rebounds (15 defensive boards), six assists, three steals, and a blocked shot in two games at McMurry and Schreiner. Addison averaged 9.0 PPG and shot 55.6 percent from the floor. On Sunday at Schreiner, he recorded an impresisve double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Christian Drummond of Colorado College was a defensive unit last week for the Tigers, who went 2-1, including 2-0 against SCAC opponents. Drummond tallied nine steals and averaged 7.7 points per game. Against Austin College and Dallas, he had seven steals. Drummond capped an impressive 87-55 victory over Dallas with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals. Senior Joey Ramirez of Concordia (Tex.) averaged 3.0 spg, and 6.0 rpg in three games last week. The senior posted multi-steal performances in the final two games of the week. He recorded a season-high five steals to go along with a team-high 24 points in a 129-54 win against Hendrix. Ramirez totaled 18 rebounds with 12 defensive boards and nine steals in a 3-0 week in league play. Junior Logan Brinkoeter of LeTourneau averaged a double-double of 16.3 points and 10.0 rebounds to go with 1.7 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. He had two double-doubles on the week, including a career-high 24 points with 10 rebounds and one steal in a loss at Schreiner. Brinkoeter had 10 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and three blocks in an overtime win at McMurry. Senior Angel Johnson of St. Thomas (Tex.) set the tone defensively in both games for the Celts, playing a major role in the team’s 2-0 weekend. The senior totaled three rebounds and three steals on the week with eight assists. Senior Mason Wallace of Texas Lutheran averaged over five rebounds a game for the Bulldogs in a 2-1 week in league play. Wallace recorded four blocks over the week including three against Concordia (Tex.). The senior was a force on the offensive end as well averaging 22 points per game with 30 in a win against Ozarks (Ark.) shooting 75 percent from the floor.
