TEMPE, Ariz. -- Southwestern University Head Men's Tennis Coach Billy Porter and Trinity University sophomore Wilson Lambeth both earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) west region awards Thursday.
Porter was named the West Region Coach of the Year, while Lambeth was tabbed as the ITA's Player to Watch.
Porter guided Southwestern to an 18-7 record and the program's first-ever national ranking. The Pirates also advanced to the SCAC championship match for the third consecutive season.
Under Porter's tutelage during the 2016-17 campaign, four players earned all-league honors, including Alexis Dimanche, who was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Nickoloz Snovely and Grant Gideon became the first two players to qualify for the NCAA Championships, as the pair will compete in the doubles bracket next week.
Lambeth put together a 13-13 record in singles this season, going 4-5 at the top line and 9-8 in the No. 2 spot. Teamed up with Matt Tyer, the duo posted a 14-12 record at the top doubles position.
