LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball players earned D3Baseball.com Team of the Week honors after the first two weeks of action.
Centenary College starting pitcher Kaleb Kirk and outfielder Michael Schimpf were both recognized, along with Southwestern University catcher, Colby Schmidt.
Schmidt, a sophomore from Liberty Hill, Texas, led Southwestern to a 2-1 record at the Firehouse Classic last weekend. Over the three game stretch, Schmidt hit .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles and seven RBIs. Schmidt also totaled 11 bases, which translated to an .846 slugging percentage. He also reached base at a .643 clip over the weekend. Schmidt provided the walk-off single in Southwestern's come-from-behind 13-12 win over Oglethorpe on Friday.
Schimpf, a senior from Shreveport, La., has been on fire the first two weeks of the season, recording at least one hit in all seven games, and hitting for the cycle in a 9-4 win over Redlands. Schimpf is hitting .481 (13-for-27) for the season with 12 runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, a triple and two home runs. His slugging percentage of .852 currently leads the the conference.
Kirk, a junior from Nacogdoches, Texas, has had quite the start to the season with more strikeouts (18) than innings pitched. He has allowed only seven hits through 13 innings. Against East Texas Baptist's high-powered offense Friday night, he went 8 innings and struck out 10 without allowing a runner past second all game. He has yet to give up a run this season.
