LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track & field teams - Austin College, University of Dallas and Southwestern University - were in action last week with all three of those squads competing at the UT-Tyler Icebreaker Classic.
On the track, Jarrod Garcia of Southwestern posted the best finish in the 100 meters among SCAC student-athletes, finishing in 27th with a time of 13.24. His teammate Ryan Smith was tops in the 200 meters, posting a time of 23.65, good for a 19th place finish. In the 400 meters, Dallas' Luke Lacour had the best finish among SCAC competitors, placing 24th in a time of 56.58. Southwestern's Adrian Washington placed 13th in the 800 meters in a time of 2:00.11 and Austin College's Chris Biffar was 21st in the 1500 meters in 4:13.87. Chris' brother Johnny led all SCAC participants with a 19th place finish in the 5000 meters, coming home in a time of 16:14.55. Southwestern's Keith Rupe topped all SCAC performers in both the 110 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles, placing 12th in both events in times of 17.69 and 1:08.07, respectively. Southwestern's 4x400 meter relay team posted a top 10 finish, coming in sixth with a time of 3:32.21.
In field events, Southwestern's Christopher Ojonta placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.72 meters - the highest individual finish for any SCAC student-athlete at the meet.
Next week, three conference teams are scheduled to compete, including Colorado College taking to the track for its inaugural outdoor event - the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird on March 20. In addition, Dallas is scheduled to compete at the TCU Invitational and Trinity is slated to participate at the Abilene Christian/Wes Kittley Invitational.
