LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Southwestern traveling to Colorado College.
The Southwestern women (6-3; 4-0 SCAC) defeated Colorado College (1-2; 0-1 SCAC) 9-0 on Saturday. Among the highlights, in doubles, Nina Mitrofanova and Taylor Despriet defeated Olivia Dicks and Magdalene Gonzales 8-3 at the No.1 spot and in singles, Mitrofanova defeated Gonzales at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3) and Esther Bowers bested Keelie Bennett (6-4, 6-3) at the No. 2 line.
Trinity (5-5; 1-0 SCAC) picked up a couple of non-conference road wins, sweeping East Texas Baptist 9-0 on Saturday before pulling out a 5-4 victory over Texas-Dallas on Sunday. The Tigers are a perfect 5-0 against Division III competition this season. Among the highlghts on Saturday, first-years Cate Cushing and Elodie Richard cruised through their singles contests in lines three and five to clinch the match after Trinity swept through doubles action. On Sunday, Richard won a third-set tiebreaker at line five singles to break a 4-4 tie and clinch the match against UT-Dallas. After the teams went back and forth all afternoon, it all came down to Richard against Stephanie Joseph of UTD at #5 singles. Richard took the first set 6-1, but Joseph battled back for a 6-4 win to send it to a tiebreaker. Richard edged out Joseph 7-6 (7-5) in the third to give Trinity the victory.
Austin College (3-4; 1-1 SCAC) dropped an 8-1 decision to East Texas Baptist on Friday before evening out its road trip mark with an 8-1 decision over LeTourneau on Saaturday. Phoebe Shapard delivered Austin College's lone victory in Friday's match, picking up a 7-5, 6-4 win at number two singles. On Saturday, the 'Roos cruised to an 8-1 victory over LeTourneau. AC won two of three doubles matches and swept singles action, with Gigi Francis and Phoebe Shapard winning 8-2 at number one doubles and Madelin Hiler and Sierra Thomas getting an 8-4 win at line three. Among the highlights in singles action, Francis battled to a hardfought win at number one singles, winning 5-7, 6-3, 10-3.
Schreiner (3-7; 0-1 SCAC) also split matches on the weekend, losing a 6-3 decision to Concordia (Texas) on Saturday before bouncing back with a 9-0 sweep of Sul Ross State on Sunday. After losing all three doubles matches, Schreiner's Jennifer Garcia at No. 1, Victoria Morales at No. 2 and Rachel Rompel at No. 4 each picked up individual wins to provide three points for the Mountaineers. On Sunday, Schreiner dominated doubles play, giving up just one game among the three matches. In singles play, Blair Villarreal, Kyle Nutt and Barbara Cano each picked up 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.
