LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Seven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Southwestern and St. Thomas picking up conference wins over Texas Lutheran.
Southwestern (3-0; 4-3 overall) defeated Texas Lutheran, 9-0, on Friday before splitting matches against NCAA D1 Tarleton State (7-2 loss) and Howard Payne (9-0 win) on Saturday. The Pirates used a variety of lineups on the week, and got strong play from Nina Mitrofanova at No. 2 singles, who dropped a tough 7-5, 6-4 decision to her Division I opponent. Nina Elez and Allie Ziehm picked up points for Southwestern against Tarleton State, as the duo earned wins at No. 4 (1-6, 6-4, 10-6) and at No. 6 (1-6, 6-3, 6-4), respectively.
St. Thomas (2-1; 2-2 overall) picked up its second consecutive win with a 9-0 over Texas Lutheran. Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez led the way in doubles with an 8-0 win at line one. After sweeping doubles, the Celts carried their momentum into singles. with Gonzalez, Lopez, Callighan Ard and Jenny Reynolds all sweeping to 6-0, 6-0 wins.
The Colorado College women (0-0; 1-0) opened its 2021 season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Division II Colorado State University-Pueblo Sunday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The all-freshman team of Keelie Bennett and Elizabeth Girian led the way at No. 2, earning an 8-2 victory. Girian was the first singles match off as she won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 position and Malia Rivera clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 5.
Austin College (1-1; 2-3 overall) split matches this past week. Austin College defeated University of the Ozarks, 5-4, on Friday before dropping a 5-4 decision to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday. Gigi Francis and Phoebe Shapard won at No. 1 doubles in both matches as did Madelin Hiler and Sierra Thomas at No. 3.
Schreiner (0-1; 2-6 overall) also split a pair of matches, losting 8-1 to East Texas Baptist on Friday before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory against LeTourneau on Saturday. Victoria Morales paced the Mountaineers over the weekend, earning a pair of victories at No. 2 singles.
The Trinity women (0-0; 2-4 overall) was handed a 7-2 defeat at the hands of NCAA II Texas A&M University-Kingsville Saturday afternoon in the team's home opener. Megan Flores and Cate Cushing posted a strong 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles and Zoe Kaffen tallked a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 as the Tigers' lone singles victory.
SCAC Women’s Tennis returns to the court this week as nine matches are scheduled, including conference matchups between Trinity and Texas Lutheran on Friday, Southwestern and Colorado College on Saturday, and Trinity and St. Thomas on Sunday.
