LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Trinity University picking up a conference wins at Texas Lutheran.
Trinity (3-5; 1-0 SCAC) scored a 9-0 victory at Texas Lutheran Friday afternoon to open the 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference season. The Tigers posted shutouts in two of three doubles and five of six singles matches over the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-4 SCAC) to improve to 3-0 in NCAA III competition thus far in 2021. Elodie Richard was credited for clinching Friday's match as she made her line-two singles debut with a 6-0, 6-0 tally. A day later, the Trinity women were beaten 7-0 at home by NCAA Division I United States Air Force Academy. The doubles duo of Mary Kaffen and Zoe Kaffen fought on past the doubles point clinch, earning a 7-6 (7-4) victory at the No. 2 line.
Southwestern (5-4; 3-0 SCAC) split a pair of matches over the week, defeating NCAA Division I Prairie View, 6-3, on Tuesday before dropping a 6-3 decision to NCAA Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday. The Pirates earned two of the three doubles points against Prairie View and then earned victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles after the Panthers evened the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Taylor Despriet clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. On Thursday, the Pirates dropped all three doubles matches but picked up victories from Esther Bowers at No. 2, Sydney Wahl at No. 5 and Allie Ziehm at No. 6 singles.
St. Thomas (3-2; 2-1 SCAC) cruised to a 9-0 sweep of LeTourneau on Friday - the team's third straight victory. After allowing just a cumulative eight points in doubles action, the Celts swept singles play as well, with Alyssa Davila's match on the No. 3 line the only one needing three sets as she pulled off the 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 come-from-behind win.
In othter action involving SCAC teams, Colorado College (1-1; 0-0 SCAC) dropped its first mach of the 2021 season, losing at home to Dallas Baptist, 6-1, on Wednesday.
