LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams returned to the court this past week, highlighted by Southwestern hosting the first conference match-up of the season against St. Thomas.  

The Southwestern women (2-0 SCAC; 2-2 overall) defeated Schreiner (0-1 SCAC; 1-5 overall), 6-1, on Saturday - in between tough losses to Division II St Mary's (Texas), 7-0, on Friday and Division I Texas State, 5-2, on Sunday. Despite the 1-2 mark, the Piirates had some solid performances on the week against tough competition. Mariana Quetzeri and Alli Ziehm picked up a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles against St. Mary's and, after making an adjustment in their doubles pairings on Sunday, Esther Bowers and Elez earned a 6-4 victory over Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Nikita Pradeep of Texas State in the No. 2 spot. In singles play in that same match, Elez and Syndey Wahl each pulled out three-set victories as Elez defeated Chacadyah Israel-Lewis 1-6, 7-6, 10-6 in No. 4 singles, and Wahl bested Renata Gonzalez 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 in No. 6 singles. 

St. Thomas (1-1 SCAC; 1-2 overall) picked up its first win of the season Sunday with a convincing 8-1 conference win over Austin College. The doubles teams of Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez, Karissa Guzman and Asan Atilla, and Alyssa Davila and Jenny Reynolds swept the doubles action, picking up 8-4, 8-4 and 8-5 victories, respectively. Gonzalez, Lopez, Davila and Reynolds all had comfortable victories in singles play, and Atilla helped the Celts grab their first win by taking her three-set thriller 3-6, 6-2, and 11-9.

Rebounding from its loss to UST on Saturday, Austin College (1-1 SCAC; 1-2 overall) defeated Texas Lutheran (0-1 SCAC; 0-2 overall), 8-1, on Saturday. The 'Roos swept through doubles competition, taking 8-1 victories in flight one and flight three action with the teams of Gigi Francis and Phoebe Shapard and Megan Morris and Sierra Thomas earning those wins, respectively. Maya Leisey and Madelin Hiler were able to complete the doubles sweep with a hard-fought victory on line two, taking the point with an 8-7 victory. Francis (No. 1), Shapard (No. 2), Hiler (No. 4), Morris (No. 5) and Thomas (No.6) each earned victories in singles play, with Thomas posting the shutout 6-0, 6-0 win.

SCAC Women’s Tennis returns to the court this week as 10 matches are scheduled over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including conference matchups between Texas Lutheran and Southwestern on Friday and St. Thomas and Texas Lutheran on Saturday.
