John Richards, Sewanee-University of the South, Men's Swimming

JOHN RICHARDS OF SEWANEE-UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a junior on the men's swimming team from Evans, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending January 9, 2011.

Richards is captain of the Sewanee men's swim team and a winner of the Iron Man award. He serves as a proctor for Sewanee residential life, rush chair and environmental chair for Chi Psi, and as a senator for the junior class. As a member of the Student Senate, Richards sits on the student life committee and works to improve students' lives at Sewanee. 

Richards is also a member of HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Latino Awareness), Invisible Children, Falling Whistles, the Asian Sensation Club, and Growing in Grace.

Last year, he participated in a spring break outreach trip to Ecuador and this year he is serving as a student leader for the trip. Richards also participates in a program called Well Directed Curiosity, where he serves as a positive male role model for fifth grade boys and he volunteers monthly at an animal shelter with his fraternity brothers.
