Michael Verbeek, DePauw University, Football

MICHAEL VERBEEK OF DEPAUW UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending November 14, 2010.

Verbeek, a quarterback on the DePauw football team, has immersed himself into volunteer efforts in his short time in Greencastle.

He has worked as a Bonner Scholar - a community volunteering based national organization - and this past January, went on a service trip to Chicago where he served various shelters such as soup kitchens and daytime shelters that are established specifically for women and/or kids.

Verbeek went to the Mississippi Gulf Coast on a spring break trip in 2010 to assist with the Keeping America Beautiful organizaion.

Locally, he is a student coordinator for the homeless shelter - Away Home Shelter - where he as served for two years. He has also done various community outreach activities with his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, including with the humane society and on various food drives.

This past summer, Verbeek volunteered as a camp leader with a summer youth camp.

In the future, Verbeek plans to get involved with APO, a community service fraternity, and he is already planning for another spring break service trip.

For his second semester, he plans to be the Opportunity housing intern which will allow him more time to work with the homeless.
