TONY DISTLER
OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a junior from
Louisville, Ky., has been selected the SCAC Character &
Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending
October 3, 2010.
Distler, a member of the mens' socceer team, was
one of two student-athletes selected last year to be on a board
with the AD and other faculty members to discuss issues pertaining
to athletics and academics. The goal of the committee was to
improve the experience of every student athlete while maintaining a
healthy balance between school and sport.
Off the pitch, Distler is a member of Sigma
Chi, a national fraternal organization that seeks to develop men by
fostering an atmosphere of friendship, justice and learning.
Distler serves as the organization's Scholarship Chair, which
entails ensuring the chapter is in good academic standing with
nationals and Centre. It also requires to lead study table sessions
for brothers that are struggling in academia.
Distler also serves as a Resident Director, where
he is responsible for the old Quad (three buildings on the north
side of campus). Among his responsibilities is ensuring
the safety of all residents, helping to foster an environment that
induces a mature living environment, and he also serves
as an outlet for any RAs to approach in times of trouble
or dire need.
In addition, Distler is a junior representative
for the Pre-Health Society - an organization designed to assist and
inform any student interested in a possible career in medicine. As
the junior representative, he aids in organizing meetings and
guest speakers along with visits from medical schools.
Away from campus, Distler serves on the Bate-Wood
Community Park Project. This group hopes to create an atmosphere
that fosters community, personal responsibility, and community
ownership of Bate-Wood Park through renovation efforts. By
working with the City of Danville and its Parks and Recreation
Board, the group hopes to provide the man power, resources, and
excitement necessary to not only transform the Park, but to
also provide follow-up and community building programming.
Last year, and with Distler's leadership guiding
the effort, the Centre men's soccer team held a one day, two
hour clinic for the children of this area free of charge.
