ANDREW BOSSERT
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a junior
right-handed pitcher on the University of Dallas baseball team, has
been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending April 7, 2013.
Bossert is currently tied for the SCAC lead
with six victories (against just two losses), while his 46
strike-outs rank second and his 2.16 earned run average is
fifth.
Off the baseball diamond, Bossert is a second-year
member of the UD Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He
plans to do field training this summer before commissioning as a
Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force upon graduation.
Bossert strives to become either a pilot or an
intelligence specialist.
“It is pretty important to me because both of my parents
served in the Air Force," said Bossert. "My mother
served for 15 years and my father 28. He was deployed in multiple
wars, including the War in Afghanistan. My sister is currently a
freshman at the Air Force Academy.”
A man of faith, Bossert started the UD chapter of
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) in November 2012. A group of
his baseball teammates have gathered weekly to cultivate
relationships and demonstrate a steadfast commitment to Jesus
Christ and His Word.
“I am working with other student-athletes and coaches to
start their own huddle groups that too will hopefully meet on a
weekly basis. I wanted to start FCA at UD to get rid of the
void between the student body and the Athletics Department, as well
as to bring the department together as a whole. I hope we bring the
student population and athletic teams together to create a sense of
community around a shared vocal point here on campus.”
Bossert is also a member of the UD Economics and
Action Club and the MarketShare Club. At the beginning of the
2012-13 academic year, he was an orientation leader for the newest
freshmen on campus. While studying abroad in Rome, Italy, in fall
2011, he took part in the Marino Volunteer Project in which a group
of students spent each Tuesday afternoon teaching English to
Italian fifth graders.
For the past three years over winter break,
Bossert and his family have volunteered to serve
meals at the Houston Homeless Veterans’ home.
In addition to his duties as a student-athlete and in his
community, Bossert was a Social Media Intern
during the fall 2012 semester for the Dallas branch of the law firm
Winstead PC.
