Women's Basketball Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University and Trinity University  each went a perfect 2-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to open up the 2013 portions of their schedules. The Pirates and Tigers are a combined 19-8 overall and 8-0 in league play. Both squads remained tied atop the SCAC standings.

AROUND THE SCAC

Erin Riley knocked down 6-of-8 three pointers on her way to 20 points to guide Austin College past Centenary College on Saturday. The 'Roos are now 7-8 overall and 1-4 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the victory. The 'Roos grabbed a six point halftime lead after Riley came out scorching hot, hitting all five of her first half three point attempts and scoring 15 of her 20 points in the opening half. Christina Kime scored all seven of her points to lead the 'Roos in the second half, including knocking down 5-of-6 free throws to hold off the Ladies. Riley added eight rebounds, Kime had five assists, and Brittany Stepanski scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the 'Roos to the win.

Centenary (3-10, 2-3 SCAC) went 0-1 this week, dropping its only contest on January 5 against conference foe Austin College (7-8, 1-4 SCAC) 66-58. It was the third loss in a row for the Ladies, as they struggled shooting from the field at 21 percent. Senior Vashni Sharp-Moore led all scorers with 21 points, and sophomore Dionecia Warr contributed 13. Centenary continues its six-game homestand Friday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. against Southwestern.

Colorado College began the New Year resuming conference action as it traveled to Texas to take on Southwestern University and Trinity University. The Tigers were led offensively by sophomore Courtney Tyus averaging 16 points and four assists a game. Senior Kalli Kemling contributed with 13 points and four steals a game, while senior Sarah Gunkel grabbed nine rebounds a game to lead the team defensively. CC dropped its first conference game of the season to Southwestern, 88-58, on Friday and was unable to come up with a win on Sunday as it fell to Trinity, 72-52. Kemling led the team against the Pirates tying her season-high 17 points.  Tyus led the team on Sunday against Trinity with a career-high 18 points. Colorado College (2-12, 2-2 SCAC) continues conference action on the road as it plays two games against the University of Dallas on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. in Irving, Texas.

Dallas (5-7, 0-4 SCAC) went 0-3 in road competition on the week and have dropped six straight after winning four consecutively. The Crusaders fell 66-53 to LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, on Monday. In conference play, Dallas was bested 65-59 by Trinity on Friday and lost 84-55 to Southwestern on Saturday. Head coach Jina Johansen's squad looks to rebound versus Colorado College this week in a pair of home games at the Maher Athletic Center. Both contests against the Tigers are 6 p.m. affairs.

Southwestern opened the new year with two big conference wins, winning by an average of 29.5 points this week. Friday night the Pirates hosted Colorado College and pushed their lead to 30 by seven minutes left in the first half and maintained the advantage throughout the rest of the game to win 88-58. Chelsea Leeder eclipsed the 1000 point mark in the game, scoring 13 points on the evening. Against the University of Dallas on Saturday, it was a huge second half surge both offensively and defensively that made the difference. Southwestern led by only two at halftime, but watched their lead balloon to 30 points in the second half by allowing just 21 second half points to win 84-55. With the wins SU improves to 10-4 on the year, 4-0 in the SCAC. The Pirates hit the road to face Centenary College on Friday night and Austin College on Saturday.

Trinity swept a weekend of SCAC play at home, defeating the University of Dallas and Colorado College to run the team’s winning streak to three games. The Tigers opened with a 65-59 win over Dallas on Friday night, then finished in style with a 72-52 win over Colorado College to remain tied atop the SCAC standings with a 4-0 record. Trinity continues its conference schedule this weekend, traveling to Austin College and Centenary College for the second time this season. The Tigers beat Centenary 75-54 in Shreveport, and downed Austin 65-59 in Sherman just over a month ago to open conference play.
