LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2020-21 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball schedule tipped off this past weekend with six of the league's nine teams in action.
After the COVID-19 global pandemic forced the postponement of the traditional fall season, including NCAA Division III national championships, the SCAC created a conference-only spring schedule for its nine volleyball programs, with teams scheduled to play each other in doubleheader weekends over the course of the next 10 weeks.
Competition got underway this weekend although anticipated weather issues did force the cancelation of the Dallas at Southwestern doubleheader.
Among the matches that were contested, St. Thomas swept Texas Lutheran on Friday by the scores of 3-1, 3-0. Sophomore Alaina Lanik led the Celts with 20 kills, averaging 2.86 kills per set and pitched in defensively with 42 digs. Senior setter Kelsie Walker had 47 assists over the weekend as well as four services aces, and senior defensive specialist Kaylyn Latin, the defending SCAC Backrow Player-of-the-Year, had 59 digs. Texas Lutheran junior Madison Weisinger paced the Bulldogs with 26 kills (3.71 per set) in the weekend series while sophomore Lexi Morris pitched in with 52 digs.
