LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball began its league portion of the 2021 schedule last week with six teams opening conference action, highlighted by Southwestern and Centenary earning sweeps and St. Thomas earning its first league wins in program history.

Southwestern (4-3, 3-0) swept Dallas (0-3, 0-3) in a three-game series last weekend as the Crusaders opened their 2021 campaign. It is the first time Southwestern has started the conference portion of its schedule 3-0 since the 2015 season. Maddie Mefford hit .444 at the plate (4-for-9) with four RBI, three stolen bases, one homerun, one walk, a .500 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage. Her home run came in the Pirates 19-3 win to close out the series on Sunday, it was the first homerun of the season for Southwestern. In the circle, Tori Montemayor picked up all three wins, striking out 10 in 17 innings of work. She allowed just four runs and scattered 15 hits, posting a 1.65 ERA over the three games. Montemayor also helped herself out at the plate in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Dallas freshman Brenna Kelly has a nice collegiate debut series for the Crusaders. She recorded a hit in each game of the series, including a three-run home run in Sunday’s 19-3 loss.
Centenary (7-4, 2-0) is perfect through its opening two league games for the third season in a row after sweeping Austin College (0-4, 0-2) in a two-game series last Saturday, defeating the ‘Roos, 7-1 and 3-0. Freshman Hailee Leger got the win in the opener for the Ladies, pitching a complete game, striking out a season-high 11 batters, scattering three hits and allowing zero earned runs in seven innings of work. Brittney Broussard went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored in the opener. In game two, Isabelle Dominguez drove in a pair of runs and Erin Lewis singled in another, all in the bottom of the first as the three runs would hold with the Ladies posting just their second shutout of the season. Kirstyn Gomez got the win, striking out nine and allowing just four hits in 6.2 innings of work. Jaide Vidal finished with three hits in the two games to lead Austin College at the plate.
St. Thomas (4-5, 2-1) secured a 2-1 series win over Schreiner (3-8, 1-2) last weekend in three one-run contests where the team to score first in each game, lost. In the opener on Friday, the Celts captured the program’s first-ever SCAC win with a 6-5 victory. St. Thomas and Schreiner would split the doubleheader on Saturday with the Celts clinching the series, winning the opener, 5-4, and the Mountaineers getting the win in the series finale, 4-3. Sophomore Taylor Le led the way at the plate for St.Thomas, going 5-for-9 (.556) in the series with three RBI, one double and a run scored. Lindsey Longuet picked up her second win of the year in the historic win for St. Thomas on Friday, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts and allowing seven hits and just three earned runs in seven innings of work. Hannah Killmansberger went 4-for-7 (.571) at the plate in the three-game series for the Mountaineers. She finished the series with three runs scored and three RBI along with a .727 on-base percentage and a 1.143 slugging percentage. Kaylee Culpepper got the win in the circle for Schreiner, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs and eight hits in seven innings of work.
SCAC softball continues this week with St. Thomas and Centenary playing in the Hardin-Simmons/McMurry spring break softball tournament and Southwestern traveling to play Texas Lutheran in the lone conference series of the week, starting on Friday.
