LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Wrapping up the final week of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball regular season, Austin College, Centenary, Dallas, Schreiner, Southwestern, St. Thomas Texas Lutheran, and Trinity each secured a berth in the SCAC tournament.
Trinity (8-1) swept Schreiner over the weekend with a 93-77 victory Friday, followed but a 92-81 win, Saturday. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field, scoring a season-high 93 points in Friday night’s game. Tanner Brown came off the bench with 16 points in the victory, and four of Trinity’s five starters scored in double digits, paced by Ben Hanley with 15 points. Trinity sealed the No. 1 spot in the upcoming SCAC Championship on Saturday with its second victory of the weekend over Schreiner. Four Tigers finished in double figures with Kaleb Jenkins leading the way with a season and career-high 30 points. He posted his first career double-doublein the game, grabbing 11 rebounds.
Schreiner finishes 1-5 on the regular season, landing the No. 8 seed in the SCAC Championship. Matthew Rindahl averaged 22.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and shot 72.7 percent from the floor (16-22) to pace the Mountaineers over the weekend.
Dallas (4-6) swept Colorado College with an 87-78 victory Saturday and a 64-60 win Sunday to claim its spot in the championship. Five Crusaders scored in double figures on Saturday, with Michael Wambsganss leading with a team high and season-best 17 points. Letrell Toussaint and Dustin Mathis each added 14 points. In Sunday’s victory, four starters scored in double figures with Jack Boyle leading with 15 followed by Cameran Hyde with 13. Colorado College’s Jack McRoskey (0-8) led the attack on Saturday with 20 points with Sam Kinney coming off the bench recording 18 points. Scott Cunningham paced the Tigers with 12 points on Sunday.
St. Thomas (7-3) split games against Centenary with a victory on Friday, 66-63. Cameron Gims led the way for the Celts with 12 points and a season-high 18 rebounds, adding three steals and two blocks. Joshua Sanchez was the top leading scorer for UST recording 13 points.
Centenary (7-3) bounced back to gain the split with a 71-69 victory on Saturday. Seth Thomas led the Gents with a game-high 22 points, adding eight rebounds. Junior AJ Hall chipped in with a season-high 16 points.
The Celts and Gents finished the regular season tied for second behind Trinity (8-1), but with St. Thomas’ victory against the highest-seeded team (Trinity) bumped them to the No. 2 seed in what will be the program’s inaugural SCAC men’s basketball tournament.
Austin College (4-5) split games over the weekend, earning a 78-71 overtime victory Friday against Texas Lutheran. Four Roos’ scored in double figures, with Tristan Dick leading all scorers with 23 points. Michael Holland added 18 points with Jaylyn Cleamons recording 16.
Texas Lutheran’s (4-6) split came with an 81-55 victory over Austin College on Saturday. Caleb Lister recorded 19 points, adding three rebounds and two assists. Sebastian Andrade added 15 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals.
Austin College (4-5) claimed the No. 5 spot and TLU clinched the No. 6 seed in the SCAC Championship.
For the first time in league history, the 2021 men’s basketball tournament will be played on campus sites around the league with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal round action beginning this weekend.
First round play will be conducted the weekend of March 5-7, semifinals are scheduled for March 12-14 and the men’s and women’s championship will occur the weekend of March 19-21.
