JOSH SPENCER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior from Huntsville, Texas, who is a forward and captain on the men's soccer team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 4, 2009.
Spencer, who just netted a hat trick with three
goals in Sunday's 8-1 victory over University of
Dallas, is an active member of both the Southwestern and
Georgetown communities. He is a triple major in Economics, Spanish
and German and will be graduating with honors in May. Due to his
impressive academic career, Spencer has been
inducted into several honors societies including Chi Alpha Sigma,
Alpha Chi National Honor Socity, Omicron Delta Kappa National
Leadership Society, and Sigma Delta Pi.
On-campus, Spencer has served as a member of
the Student congress as an off-campus representative and delegate
to the faculty affairs council as well as treasurer on the
executive council and chair of the Fees and Allocations committee.
He successfully authored legislation to have the campus bookstore
post online a month before the start of classes, a list of the
required books for courses for the upcoming semester so as to help
students lower their book costs through the use of alternative
outlets. He has also served as president of the German Glub and was
a food critic for The Megaphone and wrote a weekly article about
local restaurants.
In the community Spencer has helped raise
money for the Ride On Center for Kids, a place that specializes in
hippotherapy. He also referees seventh grade soccer games as well
as competitive soccer competitions at high school, youth and adult
league, and all-star tournament levels. and was also selected to
participate in the Olympic Developmental Program Regional Camp as a
referee under a FIFA instructor. He is a youth soccer trainer of
primarily 10 year olds for the Georgetown Soccer Association.
Spencer has interned in various areas
including for Meritage Capital, LP, a hedge fund in Austin, Texas
and studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina last semester and
authored a 40-page report about a topic dealing with the 2001
economic crisis.
