AMY SCHORNACK
OF COLORADO
COLLEGE, a senior setter on the
women's volleyball team who hails from Plano, Texas, has been
selected the SCAC Character & Community Female
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 23,
2011.
While some student-athletes enjoy the luxury of growing into a
leadership role, Schornack was the CC volleyball
team's starting setter almost before she arrived on campus. Not
only was she up to the challenge as a freshman in 2008, but she has
become the most decorated setter in the program’s glittering
history.
Schornack, a two-time American Volleyball Coaches
Association honorable-mention All-American and first-team all SCAC
selection in 2010, broke the school career record for career
assists on Oct. 8 during a three-set victory over Rhodes College,
surpassing the previous mark of 3,718 held by Larissa Enns
(1998-01).
Ten days later, Schornack reached the 4,000-assist
plateau during a sweep of Ursuline College. She currently is within
147 of eclipsing her own single-season record of 1,259 set last
season.
Personal accomplishments are not nearly as important to
Schornack as the success of her team. In her four
seasons as the starting setter, Colorado College has posted 120-29
record (.805) and made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA
Tournament, including a trip to the Elite 8 in 2009.
That team-first attitude extends to all facets of her life at
Colorado College, both on and off the court.
The team co-captain helped plan CC’s ‘Dig Pink’
match during each of the last two seasons, led a group of players
who volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Colorado Springs
and has worked with aspiring players at summer volleyball
camps.
This year, Schornack has served as co-chair of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which has participated in
events such as Boo at the Zoo, Parents Night Out, the Quony Cup,
and National Student Athlete Day.
Active in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she is the Events
and Risk Management Chair, Schornack helped
organize the Mr. CC all-male beauty pageant, an event that forwards
all proceeds to Reading is Fundamental and TESSA. She also is a
Relay for Life team leader.
Not to be overlooked, Schornack’s academic
accomplishments are just as impressive as her success on the
volleyball court. The economics and business major, who owns a 3.4
cumulative grade-point average, is a three-time member of the
SCAC’s Fall Honor Roll, as well as a recipient of the Kappa
Kappa Gamma Book Scholarship and a member of the Order of Omega
(All-Greek Honor Society).
Schornack, who plans to enter the business world
after graduating in May, already has completed summer internships
with Beal Bank (2009), Univesco Inc. (2010) and Lockton Companies
(2011).
