BOERNE, Texas -- It became fairly apparent from the early
going that Tuesday's final round of the 2014 SCAC Women's Golf
Championship at Tapatio Springs was going to come down to two
squads - Trinity University and Southwestern University. When the
dust had settled, it was the 15th-ranked Tigers who were one shot
clear (646-647) of the 24th-ranked Pirates as Trinity earned its
first conference women's golf title since 1995. Official

Southwestern, the defending champions, entered Tuesday's final
round with a five-shot lead, but Trinity quickly put itself within
striking distance and the two teams remained within a couple of
shots of each other throughout the back nine. When the final group
walked up the 18th hole, Trinity was holding one-shot team
lead.
In that final group, and playing from just off the edge of the
green, Southwestern senior Ali Walden hit a great putt that just
lipped out of the cup that had it gone it would have forced the
first team playoff in SCAC golf history.
Trinity had four players make all-conference, led by 2013 SCAC
Freshman- and Player-of-the-Year, Brigette Lee, who shot a two-day
total of 159 and finished in third place. First-year players
Christine Campbell and Hanna Ninner both shot a two-day score of
162 (tied for fourth). Niner's second-round 79 (+7) tied for the
low round of the day. Lee, Campbell and Ninner were named
First-Team All-SCAC for their efforts and sophomore Madeline Moran
earned All-SCAc Second Team honors with a two-day score of 163
(tied for seventh). Ninner was also named 2014 SCAC
Freshman-of-the-Year.
Southwestern was led by Walden, who earned 2014 SCAC Women's
Golfer-of-the-Year and First Team All-SCAC honors after finishing
with a two-day score of 155 - the third-lowest 36-hole score in
SCAC Women's Golf history. Sophomores Bernice Leonard (163 - tied
for seventh) and Keeley Coburn (165 - 10th place) both earned
All-SCAC Second Team honors.
Rounding out the SCAC women's team scores, Schreiner University
was third with a two-day total of 663, Centenary College was fourth
at 687 and Texas Lutheran University finished fifth with a score of
755.
Several SCAC schools and individuals now await a possible bid to
the NCAA Division III Championships, to be held May 13-16 at
Howey-in-the Hills, Florida.
