SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary Department of Athletics and Director of Athletics Ronda Seagraves announces the hiring of Monty Curtis as the head men’s lacrosse coach, effective January 1, 2014.
“I am honored to announce Monty Curtis as the new head men’s lacrosse coach at Centenary,” stated Seagraves. “Coach Curtis’ ability to lead us to the next step in this new program will be remarkable. He brings not only extensive lacrosse knowledge, but a familiarity of Centenary College and an extensive recruiting base throughout the high school lacrosse ranks. His excitement and passion for recruiting high quality student-athletes and team building is a win-win for Centenary College and the Gents.”
No stranger to the college, Curtis returns after previously serving as the Vice President for Enrollment Services.
Curtis takes over the second-year program which was the first and only NCAA lacrosse team in the state of Louisiana.
“While we are entering our second season of varsity competition, this wonderful opportunity was built on the shoulders of the prior club team,” said Curtis. “Their dedication and commitment will always be a proud of our heritage.”
Curtis brings twenty-plus years as a player, coach and conference administrator to the program. He served an instrumental role in the founding of fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member, Southwestern University’s lacrosse club team and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1995.
During his time as the Pirates’ coach, Curtis compiled a 70-56 record including a win in the conference finals over the University of Texas and securing a 15-1 record and clinching the Southwest Lacrosse Association Championship.
“Coach Dicken has great knowledge of the game and the team,” Curtis said. “I am excited to have him joining me on the sidelines for this season. He did well serving as the interim coach over the past few months. I can already tell that we will work well together. “
Centenary opens the season on Feb. 21 against Hendrix College.
