Trinity women; DePauw men claim SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships


NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trinity University women's team, along with the DePauw University men's team, claimed Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships Saturday night at the Tracy Caulkins Competition Pool at the Centennial Sportsplex. It was an amazing four days of competition in Nashville as a combined 26 SCAC men's and women's swimming and diving records were broken.

Trinity received a strong performance from its divers to help the Tigers outdistance themselves from Centre and DePauw. Trinity finished the meet with 865 points followed by Centre College (789) and DePauw (776).

The DePauw men won, rather convincingly, scoring 916 points to outpace Trinity's 769 points.

Winning SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet was Centre junior Meredith Angel. Angel scored a meet-high 60 points actually tying DePauw sophomore Callie Boehme. However, Angel earned two NCAA "A" cuts and one "B" cut to earn the award.

SCAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet went to DePauw's John Cook. Cook tallied a meet-high 60 points, slightly edging Trinity first-year swimmer Alex Miranda.

SCAC Female Diver of the Meet went to Hayely Emerick of Trinity. Hunter Hayes of Centre was crowned SCAC Men's Diver of the Meet.

The award for SCAC Women's Staff of the Year went to Southwestern University, led by interim head coach Nicole Kaupp. Centre, led by head coach Dean Brownley, won the SCAC Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.

Nine more individual records fell during Saturday night's finale. Callie Boehme of DePauw shattered the women's 1650 freestyle mark that she established at last year's championship. She posted a NCAA "B" cut with a finishing time of 17:22.09. Andrew Battles of Trinity did the same on the men's side, posting a new men's 1650 freestyle conference record with a finishing time of 15:56.95 (also a "B" cut) - the first-ever sub 16 minute time in SCAC championships history.

Centre's Angel set a new conference standard in the women's 100 freestyle, coming home with a NCAA "B" cut finishing time of 52.06. DePauw's Cook did the same in the men's 100 freestyle with a SCAC-best time of 44.88 - a NCAA "A" cut.

DePauw's Catie Baker broke the women's 200-yard breaststroke conference record with a NCAA "B" cut finishing time of 2:22.01, and her teammate, Amanda Stier, set a new mark in the women's 200 fly during the prelims with a SCAC-best swim of 2:05.40. She won the event later that evening with a finishing time of 2:06.99.

Trinity's Alex Miranda shattered the men's 200 fly mark with a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:51.76.

In the final relays of the evening, the Centre College women (Colleen Maggard, Lis Starr, Sadie Allen and Meredity Angel) set the new SCAC 400-yard freestyle relay standard with a NCAA "B" cut finish of 3:31.82. The DePauw University men (Josh Baugh, John Montgomery, Steve Klabak and John Cook) also set a new SCAC 400-yard freestyle mark. The Tiger foursome finished with a NCAA "B" cut time of 3:03.06.

Other winners included Bailey Thompson of Southwestern in the women's 200 backstroke (2:08.26 - a NCAA "B" cut), Charlie Boehme of DePauw in the men's 200 backstroke (1:54.94), and Cortland Day of Sewanee in the men's 200 breaststroke (2:08.74),
