Field Hockey Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC
SUWANEE, Ga. - As field hockey prepares for a weekend of non-conference action Centre sits atop the league with a 5-1 conference record, 8-1 overall. The start for the Colonels in the second best in school history only a 10-0 start in 2007 was better.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Centre won a pair of
SCAC home matches this past week against DePauw and Sewanee to push
their record to 8-1 (5-1 SCAC). Both matches were 1-0 shutouts with
seniors Rachel Watkins (Chicago, Ill.) and Sally Faulkner
(Louisville, Ky.) scoring the game winners. Freshman Barbara Parks
(Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded the assist on Faulkner's goal.
Collectively, the Colonel defense limited its opponents to just
eight total shots on the weekend and eight penalty corners. The
Colonels tallied 32 shots and 29 penalty corners in comparison en
route to the shutout wins. Centre now sits atop the SCAC standings
with two conference matches remaining. They travel this week to
Ohio for matches against Great Lakes Region opponents Ohio
Wesleyan, Denison, and Kenyon.
DePauw split its two weekend games as it dropped a
1-0 game at Centre and topped Transylvania, 2-1. Centre outshot the
Tigers 16-5 and scored the game's only goal with two minutes left
in the first half. The Tigers held a 24-5 shots advantage at
Transylvania and a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners with Laruen
Castagno scoring in the first half and Annie Donelan adding a
second-half score. DePauw is now 8-5 overall and 3-2 in SCAC play
and travels to Oberlin and Wooster this weekend.
Hendrix dropped a pair of matches over the weekend
and stretched its losing skid to six after a 0-1 loss to Rhodes
College on Saturday afternoon and a 1-2 OT loss to Lindenwood
University on Sunday. The Warriors have now lost four-straight one
goal affairs and remain winless in conference action. The Warriors
will take the week to prepare for a big road trip to Manhattanville
College and Mount Holyoke College in Purchase, N.Y. and New Canann,
Conn., respectively. Rhodes topped Hendrix for the second time this
season on junior forward Lindsay Gurkovich’s goal in the 33rd
minute on Saturday. Warriors’ first year forward Kelly Rappe
led the team with three shots on-goal and sophomore goalkeeper
Alyssa Havens made eight saves in the match.
Rhodes battled against conference foe Hendrix this
weekend and came away with a 1-0 win and their fifth shutout of the
season. Lindsey Gurkovich scored the game’s only goal on an
assist from Charlie Wagner near the end of the first half. Rachel
Webb, Sara Sanders, and Marie Mason played well for Rhodes on the
defensive end while Charlie Wagner drove the team’s offense.
Rhodes outshot Hendrix 9-8 while both teams secured 6 penalty
corner opportunities. Meghan Cullen had 7 saves in her third solo
shutout this fall. The Lynx (7-2, 4-1 SCAC) will travel to Virginia
this coming weekend to take on Bridgewater, Washington and Lee, and
#9 Lynchburg.
Sewanee went 1-1 on the weekend with a 4-1 win
over Transylvania Saturday morning before falling 1-0 on a late
Centre goal on Sunday. On Friday for the Tigers, Clare Ashburn
(Washington, D.C., Holton-Arms), Taylor Skeen (Baltimore, Md.,
Towson), Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y., John Jay), and Elise
Landau (Wernersville, Pa., Lancaster Country Day) scored goals in
the winning effort. Sewanee is now at .500 with a 5-5 record and is
1-4 in the SCAC.. The Tigers will play at Roanoke, Eastern
Mennonite and W&L next weekend for Fall Break.
