SCAC to send 16 Student-Athletes to 2018 NCAA Convention

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference will be represented by 16 student-athletes at the 2018 NCAA Convention. The convention will run from Wednesday, January 17 through Saturday, January 20, and is being held at the home of NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Student-athletes from all eight SCAC member institutions are scheduled to attend, including: Karolina Cruz of Austin College; Gabe Rodriguez of Centenary College; Daniel Krueger, Michael Gorman and Liza Huschle of Colorado College; Kevin McGuirk and Melanie Savala of the University of Dallas; Gregg Gutierrez, Trevor Wren and Lindsey Fitz of Schreiner University; Angelica Grayson of Southwestern University; Chris Frank and Selina Wicklund of Texas Lutheran University; and Davis King, Maggie Linker and Ivy Claflin of Trinity University.

Made possible through the NCAA Division III Strategic Initiative Grant, the 16 student-athletes will participate in activities ranging from education sessions to business sessions to the NCAA Honors Celebration.

"Providing our student-athletes the opportunity to experience the educational and networking experiences associated with attending a NCAA Convention has proven to be a very popular endeavor," said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. "We took 18 student-athletes to the 2012 Convention and 22 to the 2016 event and those experiences, without a doubt, were two of the more successful initiatives that we have undertaken in my time at the conference office."

Hanberry said the grant from the NCAA provides the conference an annual vehicle to focus on different areas of social responsibility and integration. For the 2017-18 academic year, the focus is Student-Athlete Well Being and many of the students selected for this year's intiative have expressed an interest in a potential career in athletics administration.

Many conferences now sponsor similiar initiatives but in 2012, the SCAC was one of the first conference's at any level to bring a large contingent of student-athletes to the NCAA Convention.
