Van Arsdale named mens lacrosse coach at Colorado College
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Guy Van Arsdale, one of the most respected coaches in collegiate mens lacrosse, has been named head coach at Colorado College, Director of Athletics Ken Ralph announced today.

Five SCAC teams earn AVCA honors
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) volleyball programs earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award honors, the AVCA announced. Birmingham-Southern, Colorado College, DePauw, Rhodes and Trinity all earned the honor.

SCAC has 11 swim squads named CSCAA Scholar-Athlete Teams
CHICAGO, Ill. - The College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) unveiled its Spring 2009 list of Scholar-Athlete Teams, and 11 SCAC squads (six women's, five men's) earned places on the listing. In all, 347 teams representing 238 colleges and universities earned the distinction based on a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2008-09 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll and Sewanee-The University of the South was ranked 17th among all of Division III programs.

SCAC announces Spring 2009 Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll
SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) named a record 1,029 student-athletes to the 2009 SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll on Wednesday. This year's total eclipsed last year's previous record of 948 student-athletes.

Patrick Johnston Tapped to Lead Sewanee Women's Soccer
SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Former All-American and All-ACC player Patrick Johnston has been named the next head coach for Sewanee's women's soccer program, according to Mark Webb, athletic director for Sewanee. Johnston has previous experience on the Mountain as the goalkeeper coach for the 2008 Tigers, who had a 10-win season.

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Recent Sewanee Graduate Jordan Casey (Charleston, S.C./James Island) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, according to Teaera Strum of the NCAA. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

Eight From SCAC Earn NFF 2009 Hampshire Honor Society Membership
DALLAS, Texas - Recently, the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced the members of the 2009 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a 3.2 GPA or better. A total of 564 players from 266 schools qualified for membership in the society's third year, including eight from the SCAC.

Julie Beer hired as Centre's first women's lacrosse coach
DANVILLE, Ky. - After recently deciding to add both men's and women's lacrosse programs, Centre College Director of Athletics and Recreation, Brian Chafin, has announced Julie Beer has been hired as the program's first head coach, and will lead the program when it begins play in the spring of 2011.

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Dan Carrington has been named as the head men's and women's swimming and diving coach for the Pirates. Oglethorpe Men's Golf Team Earns School's First-Ever National Championship; Loftsson Wins Individual Title

LUCIE, Fla. - With a final-round 289, the Oglethorpe University men's golf team earned the school's first-ever national title, winning the the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship Saturday afternoon at the PGA Village. The Petrels' Olafur Loftsson won the individual national title with a playoff victory over University of La Verne's Mitchell Fedorka.

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - Hendrix College sophomore left-hander Jordan Suydam boasted a four-hit 3-0 shutout heading into the eighth inning of the Warriors second game of the 2009 NCAA Division III West Regional against University of Texas at Tyler on Friday at Roy Helser Field. However, the Patriots rallied for five runs in the eighth to post a 5-3 come-from-behind win, eliminating the Warriors from the tournament.

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - For the ninth straight year the Oglethorpe University men's golf team teed off at the NCAA Golf Championships today in Round One action. The Petrels shot a team 13-over 301 on the tougher Dye course to hold down a tie for 16th place after day one.

In that same balloting, Southwestern University head coach Angela Froboese was voted SCAC Coach-of-the-Year in her first year as head coach of the Pirates.

Joe Vari Named Women's Soccer Coach at Rhodes
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Joe Vari was named the Women's Soccer Coach and Assistant Coordinator of Recreational Services at Rhodes College today. Vari served as the men's and women's assistant coach this past season at Rhodes. Vari was instrumental in helping the women's team to their first SCAC Championship since 1991 and the team's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships.

Hendrix & Millsaps to represent SCAC in NCAA Baseball Championship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the first time since 2006, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference placed two teams in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship field of 54 teams. Hendrix College, which won the league's automatic bid, is the sixth seed in the West Regional. Millsaps College, which was ranked #1 earlier in the season, earned an at large bid and is the second seed in the Central Regional.

DePauw Tigers Bow out of NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament to Top-ranked Bears
St. Louis, Mo. DePauw, ranked 12th in NCAA Division III, wrapped up the dual meet portion of the season at 22-4 after dropping a 5-0 decision at Washington University in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Third Round. The top-ranked Bears advanced to the national quarterfinals with the win and improved to 21-2.

Colorado College To Discontinue Football And Softball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In an effort to reorganize its athletics department and weather the ongoing economic crisis, Colorado College will discontinue three NCAA Division III sports football, softball and water polo effective at the end of the current academic year.

Austin College Sophomore Dies Unexpectedly
SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College campus remains in a state of shock over the news of a tragedy that occurred on campus early Monday evening. Zachary Swirczynski, a 20-year-old sophomore from Muenster, Texas, collapsed while playing a game of pick-up basketball with his football teammates at the Thomas R. Williams Intramural Complex, an outdoor facility on the west edge of campus.

DePauw softball player assists in US Airways rescue
GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Like many students, juniors Megan Soultz and Matthew Nance seized the opportunity to take a Winter Term internship, theirs with the New York City Fire Department. What they didn't expect was the chance to assist with a large-scale emergency that dominated national headlines: the rescue of 155 passengers and crew on Flight 1539 from New York's LaGuardia Airport on January 15.

Trinity University tabbed as favorite to win SCAC Baseball championship
SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting among the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's baseball coaches, Trinity University was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the 2009 SCAC baseball championship. The Tigers are coming off a 2008 season in which they went 35-15 and advanced to the NCAA Division III West Regional final.

Millsaps' Jim Page Earns Career Win #500

Record 776 student-athletes highlight SCAC Fall 2008 Academic Honor Roll
SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) named a record 776 student-athletes to the 2008 SCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll on Tuesday. This year's total eclipsed last year's previous record of 715 student-athletes. Since its inception in the fall of 1997, over 13,700 student-athletes have achieved recognition for their contributions in the classroom.

Austin College's Deb Hunter To Receive Banner in Williams Arena

Austin College womens basketball coach Deb Hunters name still appears throughout the University of Minnesotas basketball record book, and this season the Golden Gophers will bestow the ultimate honor on Hunter when she will become just the fifth player in program history to have her jersey honored with a banner to be hanged from the rafters of Williams Arena.

For Roberts, 50-year old basketball game leads to a new NCAA record
SEWANEE, Tenn. - Recently, during some routine cleaning out of files, an AP article surfaced describing a 53-rebound effort by Sewanee grad Jim Roberts (C'59) in a 57-49 victory over Lambuth on February 24, 1958. This past Thursday morning, the NCAA verified Roberts' performance as the all divisions single-game NCAA record.

Coach Smith brings proven experience to Sewanee after serving at the helm of a successful basketball program that is steeped in tradition.
