Centre defeats Maryville on buzzer beater
With the score tied at 71 apiece, sophomore center Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) hit a lay-up as time expired to give the Centre College men's basketball team a 73-71 road win over Maryville College, Tuesday, Nov. 18 in Maryville, Tenn.
The Colonels have now won their first two games by a combined four points to open the season 2-0. The game was the first of the season for Maryville, which falls to 0-1.
The first half was tight throughout as the lead changed hands 12 times. After senior guard T.C. Thomason (Russellville, Ky.) scored to give Centre a 26-24 lead with 2:27 remaining in the opening period, the Scots scored five of the final seven minutes to take a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
The Colonels out-scored Maryville 19-10 to open the second half and take a 49-39 lead with 13:24 left in the game. The lead grew to as many as 17 points (58-41), but the Scots would make a run.
Maryville used a 14-2 run to cut the Centre lead to 60-55. The two teams went back and forth exchanging baskets. Trailing by seven with 1:34 left, the Scots scored eight of the next nine points, including a basket with five seconds left to tie the game at 71. The Colonels then raced down the court with Lloyd hitting the game-winner as time expired to give Centre the 73-71 victory.
Junior Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) led all scorers with 20 points on eight of 13 shooting. Senior guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) added 17 points, while Thomason finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Eryk Watson led the Scots with 19 points. Greg Hernandez, who hit the game-tying basket with five seconds left, finished with 16 points and Christopher Orr scored 10 points in the loss.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Nov. 22 to host in-state rival Transylvania University in its 2008 home-opener. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
