OGLETHORPE MEN WIN OVERTIME THRILLER OVER EMORY,
The Oglethorpe University men's basketball team began the 2008-2009 season in style on Sunday night by topping cross-town rival Emory University, 89-81 in overtime. Trailing for most of the second half, two free-throws by Joe Kennedy with 2.2 seconds left tied the score and forced the decisive overtime.
This was a back and forth affair from the outset as in the first half alone, the score was tied 9 times with the lead changing hands an astonishing 15 times in the game's first 20 minutes. The Eagles held a slim, 42-41 lead at the half and maintained a lead of 3, 54 or 5 points throughout the second stanza.
The Petrels used a late second half run, keyed by sophomore David Allison's 3-pointer at the 1:45 mark to force the overtime. Emory's Dan Curtin missed a free-throw with 11 seconds remaining and sophomore Joe Kennedy beat the defense on the other side to draw a 2-shot foul with 2.2 remaining.
In the overtime period, Oglethorpe outscored Emory 14-6 to claim the thrilling season-opening win on Pinholster Court.
The Petrels were led by sophomore Todd Ward's 25 points and 16 rebounds in the contest. Allison added 26 points of his own to go with 6 assists in controlling the game from the point guard position. Kennedy added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists to his fine all-around game.
At 1-1, Oglethorpe will travel to Philadelphia this weekend for a tournament against Haverford and Swarthmore.
