Bob King embarks on his 16th season as Trinity's Director of
Athletics, establishing the department as one of the premier
programs in all of Division III. Trinity has twice finished
fourth out of 421 Division III schools in the Sports Academy
Directors' Cup standings. The Tigers have also captured 11 Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) President's Trophies in the
past 14 seasons, an annual honor bestowed upon the best overall
program in the conference. No other school has won as many
President Trophy Championships as Trinity.
Since King joined the department, Trinity has won four NCAA
Division III National Championships (men's and women's tennis in
2000, women's basketball in 2003, and men's soccer in 2003), as
well as four individual (Christyn Schumann) high jump national
titles. The Tigers have also won 130 SCAC Championships since
1991.
King has twice earned distinction as the National Association of
College Directors of Athletics Athletic Director of the Year, the
last one coming for the 2004-05 season. In 1999, Trinity was named
the third-best Division III school for female student-athletes by
Sports Illustrated. King has also been a strong promoter of the
true student-athlete at Trinity, and in addition to ranking seventh
nationally with 29 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients, the
GPA for the athletics department is consistently equal to - or
better than - the general student population.
Before his arrival in San Antonio in 1993, King was the director of
athletics at his alma mater and fellow SCAC school, Millsaps
College, located in Jackson, Mississippi. During his four
years with the Majors, the teams won seven conference
championships. As a Millsaps student-athlete, King was a
four-year letterman in both baseball and football. He was the
starting cornerback on the 1975 football team that reached the NCAA
Division III Semifinals, and also broke the school's career record
with 17 interceptions. King is currently second at Millsaps
in career interceptions and holds a career batting average of .320
in baseball. In 1991, he was inducted to the Millsaps College
Sports Hall of Fame.
King has also been appointed to the NCAA Division III Championships
Committee, beginning a four-year term of service in 2008-09.
